Rissington 12 Octr.1866 My dear McLean, I enclose a copy of a semi-official despatch I have received from Major Fraser. I beg that you will be so kind as to order an immediate supply of ammunition to be sent to Major Fraser - I shall endeavour to be in Napier this evening when I trust I may be able to inform you that reinforcements to some small extent have been sent, and to be able to obtain a few volunteers to reinforce him still further - It appears to me that not a moment should be lost in following up the successes of today, and I should much prefer sending a single column or the second one of a smaller number of white people. Believe me Truly yours and in haste G. S.Whitmore His Honor D. McLean Esqre. Paihipi and Ngatitawharetoa, and Ngatiraukawa 1st. Call a meeting at Taupo and invite, Rewi, Ngapora and the others, to meet him with Recata, Taraha, and the other Hawkes Bay chief who have not fought against the King mvt.also the leading Uriwera chiefs who have lately come in be present. Let the Meeting be so got up that it shall not appear that the Governmt. had any thing to do with it. 2nd. Let Honi Tupaea call a meeting at Tauranga and invite Te Moananui Te Hira Kake Ropata Pokiha and the leading Rebel chief of Piako with the Pirinakau chiefs and the Tauranga Ngatiawa may be present. Doctor Shortland might be present and report to Governmt. The Arawa Tribes should not be invited because of there action in the war. 3. WE Patene might be sent to see Rewi and Wi Kumete and tell them that Mr.McLean has been to Ngapuhi that the children of Reitu and Reipae are very much pleased with the late words of Rewi on account of the European Murder, that the Ngapuhi ask if he will appoint a time for them to meet him at his own place (Mokau or Kawhia) so that they may talk to him and that he may know that they will support him in the future in accordance with the line of action he is reported to have taken lately. The Governmt. could let the Luna take Moetana waka nene wi Hau Maihi Kauiti Papahia Mohi Tawhai, Te Tirarau, Paerama (of Ngatiwhatua) (Paona Tuhaere, Mangonui, of Bay of Islands, Hare Hongi and the Whgonia North Natives not to go) that these chiefs might make any offers to Rewi and the others according to instructions given to them. 4th. Ihaia of Waitara has been to see Rewi, in return Ihaia might be prompted to invite Rewi and Kumete to a meeting at Waitara where the Ngatitama of Wharekamri might be present with old Wetene of Tongaporutu, Wi Tako should be there and his associates from Otaki (Whgomui Natives not to come) Rewi might induce Wi Kingi to meet Ihaia at this time. 5th. Or The Luna might take Renata and Hawkes Bay Chief, the Uriwera chiefs, Honi Tupaea, Waka Nene and Ngapuhi to meet Rewi, Ngapora and party at Mokau, with Ihaia, Wi Kingi, Wi Tako and Ngatitama, the meeting to be brought about as given in No.3. The reason I use the name of Rewi so much and think he may be gained is that he is blamed by all the King movement as the sole cause of there present degraded position, and that he was the sole cause of here being so thrashed by the Europeans, from the fact that on the day of the Rangiriri battle he Rewi took up the bones of old Potatau at Ngaruawahia that while the battle was going on they were exhuming Potatau.
