. Wellington 18th. April 1846. Sir, I have the honour to inform you that I am authorised by His Excellency, the Lieutenant Governor, to offer you the appointment of Inspector of Police for the New Plymouth District, with a salary of Two Hundred Pounds per annum; the appointment to commence from the date of your proceeding to join Mr. Symonds at Wanganui. You will, however, regard this appointment as temporary until His Excellency's pleasure be made known. Should you accept this Office, I am further instructed to authorise you to at once raise a force of Ten Privates, at the pay of One Pound five shillings per week, and one Sergeant with the pay of One Pound and ten shillings per week; but you must report your report your proceedings without loss of time, to the Colonial Secretary at Auckland.
