Parata might be cautioned how he writes to his Hau Hau friends, I have received privately since the session commenced, copies of letters by him to them. Auckland October 22/72 My dear McLean, We are very much distressed about the death of my brother George, his constitution never was very strong, and he had had much exposure which I believe has hastened his death - the first in our family circle, I enclose you what appeared in the paper here. Had I heard he was in any danger I should have applied to you for leave to go to him, I have to thank Cumming and Dr.Ormond for much kindness shewn. His widow and young daughter, about 5 years old, are, I know, left badly off, and without means of support, I have sent for them to come and live with us. My principal object in writing to you is, to ask you, as she will not be entitled, I fear, to any pension, to allow her a gratuity, for which I will be grateful to you, I believe you were favorably inclined towards my brother, and he has done some service to the country. I will be obliged if you would tell me the best way to apply to the Govt. on her behalf as I am not well enough off myself to do very much, though we will do what we can. It appears to give general satisfaction that you are again in office, and you will be glad of a rest after such a warlike session are you likely to come up here soon? I remain Yours very truly Thos.McDonnell The Honble.Donald McLean C. M. G. Wellington
