Turanga October 17th. 1870. My dear McLean, I got here a few days ago having come along the Coast with Porter who was at Waiapu paying the Natives. I heard a good deal of grumbling about some two pounds extra that the men expected to get and threats of not going out again when required if it was not paid. I merely mention as it/of course you will hear it all from the proper quarter. My boy Fred who is now 16 and well grown for his age expresses a strong desire to go into the A. Constabulary. I think it would do him a great deal of good and I should not like to oppose him in it. Will you kindly assist me with information as I do not know how to proceed about it. Ropata was with me at Waiapu for a day or two before. I left. They wish that the piece of land at Awanui could be surveyed as soon as possible and the matter settled. I have pointed out in my report to Cooper that owing to the constant obstruction to communication caused by the Waiapu river I consider that the place for the R.M. is south of it.
