Waitauoa November 5th 1867 Dear McLean I have just received your letter, on my return from town, where I have been all day. I am not aware to what irregularities you allude in the Public Houses in my District. However I am glad you have given instructions to Scully on the subject, and I hope the Police will lay informations before me of any breaches of the law that may come under their cognizance, when I shall be prepared to do my part of the duty by inflicting such penalties as the law may provide. If you will communicate to the Inspector the representations that have been made to you, it will no doubt assist him in pointing out to his men the cases they should look after. With regard to Karaitiana's case, it stands thus. He was summoned by FitzGerald for some £24 for breach of agreement in regard to Survey work, and when the case came on Karaitiana applied for an adjournment to enable him to produce you as a witness. I granted the adjournments, sine die, as you were then in Wellington. The other day I gave him notice that the adjourned hearing would be on the 6th (tomorrow) and asked him the usual question - if a subpoena was necessary, or if his witness would attend without one? to which he replied that he thought he should be able to produce you in Court without. I am afraid he will lose his case now, unless you can make it convenient to attend, as it would be unreasonable to grant him a second adjournment. I remain Yours faithfully G. S. Cooper Please excuse the smudge.
