. Tauranga Sepr. 13th, 1871 My dear Mr.McLean I arrived here this morning in the Luna. I am all right again and my wife is better. But have to thank you for allowing me to fix my head quarters again at Tauranga. It will be very much better for me and my principal work is here Now the next question how am I to bring my household from Auckland? - My idea is that as Te Kooti is knocking about on this side and it is very probable we may be called upon to take speedy action - the "Luna" might knock about in the Bay of Plenty for a while - I if you should approve might run up to Auckland in her and bring any matters down - If you think she cannot be spared I must get your authority to incur an expence of about 25 and I will engage a vessel to bring down my family. Everything is perfectly quiet here - And I am anxious to hear what is going on in Urewera Country - just heard from Opotiki no news. Mair left for Te Kuiti at 7 o'clock A.M. on Monday last - he has about 90 people with him. Te Wheoro - Hone Te One, Wi Patene Hakerewhi, Te Reuhi and others - The "Luna" is off and must close this - I wish you heartily well over your present annoyance - It sickens one to see what little things occupy great - or would be great mens minds. Very faithfully yours Hy. T. Clarke The £25 I ask you to authorize would soon be saved in the shape of travelling expences.
