Merrett during the hours allowed him for exercise. 26. Posted usual report to you by this day's overland mail to Wellington. 27. Merrett discharged. 29. The "Cicely"- Liddell, 2 days from Wellington with a general cargo and on 30. sailed for Kawhia and Manukao, passr. Mr. Powell. May 1 General muster. Te Tahana, Raniera, Parata. the younger, and others came to Barracks and complained of Rawiri Waiana having endeavoured to incite a disturbance amongst them about the ownership of a piece of land north of Mangati belonging to Parata but disputed by Rawiri. 2 Parade. The cutter "Kahawai", 3 days from Wellington, with sundries - same blown to sea - wind S.E. 3 Died, at the Raeomiti, after a long illness, Mere, daughter of Hone Ropiha. Private Heale laid an information against R.W. Foreman, the younger for drunkeness and disorderly conduct, and against W. Heale, late of 58th. Regt. for using threatening language and obstructing him in the execution of his duty on Saturday night last. Overland Mail from Auckland. The Kahawai returned. Mr. Morgan came to Barracks and complained of Nopera, of Hauranga, seizing a spade and fern hook as payment for Mr. Morgan riding Nopera's horse across a river whilst hired for the day by Mr. Rowe who had given leave. A schooner came up from the south and passed on. May 4. Rawiri, Paora te Kopi, Tamati Waka and others came to Barracks in reference to recent dispute about land with Parata. Rawiri declares the land in dispute to be his and expressed his willingness not to use it provided Parata and his party would not they refused and have since cultivateda portion of it. 5 At about 1 a.m. William Lynch taken into custody by Johnson for drunkenness and disorderly conduct, whereupon John Seccomb interfred and called on teh standers by to rescue the prisoner which they accordingly did, at the same time assaulting and beating Johnson and Hakopa - the latter fetched Heale when Seccombe was arrested and quickly rescued by the whole party who had armed with split firewood and fencing and attacked the Police in a savage manner after they had been knocked to the ground. Went to Mr. Halse J.P. and reported - he got up and proceeded there - found about eight men, some with sticks, posted between Wood's house and omithy. At this period Wood, Coulson and Morrison appeared on the ground when we advanced to secure the whole party, they however threw down their sticks and ran away. Street and Hellier were secured the rest escaped. Dunn and Cook remained in Town till 4 a.m. at which hour they were dismissed. Heale who had received injuries in the head and face was attended by Mr. St. George. 10.a.m. Resident Magistrate came into Town. Private J. Johnson laid an information agst. Lynch, Seccombe, Street, Hellier, Bishop (2), Jordan, Pope the younger for assaulting and beating him in the execution of his duty. Received Warrants and executed them. Received certificate from Colonial Surgeon that Heale, Johnson and Hakopa were unfit for duty. Kahawai for Wellington, cargo 11 tons flour 9 barrels Eng. beer. At past 10 p.m. P. Wilson Esq. P.P. visited the Town, I went with him, and found the Seven Stars public house open and bar room full. 6. Court Day. Present - Resident Magistrate, Wilson, Halse, Flight, Wicksteed Esq. J. P. Johnson's, Hakopa's and Heale's cases heard. Lynch, Seccombe, Jordan. B. Bishop and Street were sentenced to 2 months imprisonment with hard labour. Hellier to six weeks with hard labour. Pope and J. Bishop discharged with a reprimand. Received Warrant agst. Walter Bishop and executed it. 8. Mr. Bratts house (formerly Julian's) was reported on fire this morning at about 8 o'clock, prompt assistance was rendered and but little damage sustained. Johnson's charge agst. W. Bishop heard - sentenced to 2 months imprisonment with hard labour. Heale against Foreman, fined 5/- and costs. - paid. Same agst. Neale, fined 5/- and costs - paid. Reserved three Summonses. The landlord of the seven. Stars was cautioned by Resident Magistrate not to keep his house, open after hours. Samuel Joll sworn in as a special constable by Resident Magistrate for two months from this date. At past 10 p.m. Mr. Halse J.P. visited the Town, found all quiet-and regular. H. Halse. Sergt.
