Wellington 3 October 1870 My dear Mr. McLean I find on looking through the Papers connected with the arrangement and distribution of the 5 per cents, that it is a matter which will take some time to perfect, and settle, if possible, satisfactorily to all the parties concerned. Anxious as I naturally feel to do what I can to assist you, in the way, most agreeable to you, it is now left in your hands to say, in which way I can do so best. If I enter upon this question, which I am most willing to do, I must at once forego any attempt at an Election while on the other hand it is in your power to provide me with a permanant employment by conferring upon me the office of Under Native Secretary, for which I should feel very grateful for, if agreeable to your own feelings. I remain, Faithfully yours, H.T. Kemp
