19 July 1858 Auckland My dear brother I find that I will require about £4 now so as to be able to keep my place without any one knowing my dificulty. Mr Williams and Fitzgerald required of me to purchase for the trip some stores which they will pay me for. Will you kindly settle the bill and I will get the cash from them. They asked me to become coter [?], I refused but they would have it. I am grieved to have to draw on you in this way but depend upon I will soon make it up to you. I am sorry now after staying so long that I have not waited till John came in but the chance of the vessel is but small and it is nothing but proper I should see Alex. At all events there is know use in my saying to you that my coming out here will be to my advantage as well as all connected with me as time will prove that to you. I will not spare all my abilities and energy to do well once I get to Ahuriri. I certainly feel hurt at all the detention and expence I have been to you. My share of the stores comes to £1. Three pounds I am to get from Williams & Fits. I remain dear brother your affectionate brother Archibald John McLean
