Sir, As it is important that the boundaries of the Native reserves in the Castle Point District should be as clearly defined as possible before you leave this place, and as it is also important that the boundary line of the district should be as clearly defined as possible before you leave this place, and as it is also important that the boundary line of the district inland of Mataikona recently ceded to the Govt. should also be defined, I have to request that you will at your earliest convenience proceed up the Mataikona river to a place designated Arowata where you will fix the south boundary either by driving a large stake into the ground marking a large tree or if practicable it would be preferable to take some conspicuous natural feature of the country for the boundary thence you will proceed if possible across the country to Waiokakura on the Oahanga river. If you can find on your tract a large range high hill or river running in the required direction which I have pointed out to you on the tracing in your possession it would be preferable to adopt it as a boundary. It will be necessary for you to employ 4 natives for this service for the payment of whom I will furnish you with an advance of £5. At Akitio the Native chiefs Haera and Maka will point out to you a small spot say about one or 200 acres around their present willage which they require as a reserve. When this is marked off I have to request that you will lose no time in joining the head of your department at Ahuriri to whom you will have the kindness to communicate the cause of your delay here together with a copy of these instructions. shall be glad to receive a report from you giving an estimate of the extent of country inland of the Mataikona reserve enclosing a tracing on which the surveying you have done in the district should be exhibited.
