Wanganui June 25, 73. My dear Mr. McLean, You will be glad to learn that I have now got in 288 stand of arms, and more are coming in every day. I have seen Kawana Hunia, and hope soon to get in all the arms supplied to his Tribe, some 180 stand. He wants to have a talk with you first on the matter, and seems much more inclined to give them up now, than when I first spoke to him on the subject. I shall do my best to get a Teacher for Iruharama school here, but am not sure I shall succeed, as there is not much choice in a small place like Whanganui. Directly the timber arrives I shall engage the Steamer to convey same for Parikino school, as kindly authorised by you. All the Whanganui Natives are in Town, being interested in Murimotu case to come on for hearing next Monday. Would you be disposed to favour an application on my part for some increase to my salary? I think I am entitled from length of service - twenty years resident (?) - to a saly of £400 per an! I wrote to Cooper last year about it, but perhaps he did not mention the matter to you? My family is growing up, and my expenses increase accordingly, and an extra £50 per an. would be a great assistance to me, and would encourage me in my labours for the Govt, I have now so long served. I have to thank you for much, and I make free to ask a favour of you accordingly. When you were last here I brought under your notice the special good conduct of one of my assessors, Poari te Wharehuia of Koriniti, in using his influence with his Tribe the Ngatipa, in referring a serious Land dispute to the Court for settlement, and you desired me to write to you on the subject, which I now take the liberty of doing with the view of recommending his services to your favourable consideration. He has spoken several times to me about a silver watch, and I should be glad if you would direct that one be procured and presented to him; a very good one could be got for £7 or £8. I should be glad to learn that my recommendation had met with your approval. Hoping I am not trespassing on your kindness, I am dear Sir, Yours respectfully, Richard. W. Woon.
