Taupo, Novr. 15th, 1868. Sir, I have the honor to forward the following report on the state of affairs at Taupo. The general feeling of the Natives is with us, but there are many exceptions. The greater part of the so falled friendly natives on the southern and western shores of the lake are not to be trusted. There is no doubt that constant communication is kept up between the Urewera and King. The general track taken by their messengers is across Kaingaroa, messengers also go via Tokano. I hope that you will let me have some means of communication with Napier. If orderlies are sent up they ought to travel in mufti - they ought to be descreet men and they would likely be taken for shepherds and men looking for work. I will write you more fully when I have been here a short time longer. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obed. Servant, Jno. St. George. His Honor Donald McLean, Esqr. Gen. Gov. Gt., Hawkes Bay.
