Waiapu May 17th. 1873. Dear McLean, I arrived here safely at last after having to go back to Napier from Turanga to get a vessel - only think of the Archdeacon taking advantage of my absence to come and while availing himself of all that could be got at my house, as he has often done, worked up the Natives against me. This I dont say for certain, but during his visit Mohi Ture was flying all over the District trying by threats and persuasion to get signatures to a petition for my removal. Little as I care about it, I can't feel other than contempt for the low dastardly meaness which characterises these parsons. My first visitor who came to breakfast the morning after my arrival was the Revd. Mohi all smiles and obsequiousness. An hour after the Natives began to pour in from all quarters to tell me what had been done in my absence. The Archdeacon haranguing the people about giving up Tangis etc. and giving all their money to the Church. The Natives are highly amused. They say that they saw quite enough of that in former years. How little the two revd. gentlemen knew when they were trying as they thought to injure me, that my own wishes as expressed to you were for a change. Everything is quiet at present. Upwards of a hundred came to see me yesterday which took up the whole day and I am writing this by candle light at 6 a.m. as the Mailman is waiting. My leg is still very painful if I attempt to walk although I have a spring stocking which helps to support it. Morgan is coming to see me in a day or two and a meeting will then be arranged to discuss various matters, which I shall report upon. My wife and daughters are soon going to pay a visit to the Ferards and other people so I shall be nearly alone. Watty is just starting to join the N. Zealand Bank at Gisborne and I shall have only the two young ones and Eliza. ever yours J.H. Campbell.
