Wellington 6 June 1866 My dear McLean, The "Sturt" proceeds to day for Tauranga to take some of the 1st W. Regt. to Opotiki, who are to relieve a further portion of the F. M. Settlers, who will come back in the "Sturt" to Patea - She is to call in at Napier in case you have anything to send on to Wairoa and the others Posts, where she willremain for a few hours to enable Captain Percival to pay the different parties. On her return from Patea she will probably without any delay return to the East Coast, and remain there for some time as there is much to be done - I am anxious to get Gascoigne's party from Waiapu, which is a very awkward position, and Russell thinks that when he gets a Resident Magistrate there, the detachment can be withdrawn, and I am going to give the Hawke's Bay Volunteers notice that they must expect to be soon relieved from actual service. I don't know of any particular news that the papers won't give you and I am writing against time. The Governor talks of going to the West Coast, where the Ngatiruanui's are shewing signs of submission but the reports of the meeting at Hangatiki would lead us to suppose that there might be more trouble in the Province of Taranaki - Yours very truly T. M. Haultain
