NapierOct. 3, 1876 Dear Sir Donald, I hope you are well in health after the long wearisome debates night and day -- and glad the House has got into working order at last. What are insignificant animal Sir George Grey must in his heart feel and see himself to be. Everyone says he must be mad. I posted to you yesterday a letter from a Native to Sir George Grey with translation -- asking in 1864 -- for £4.4.0 for some things Sir George got -- and threatening he would sue him in the R.M. Court if he did not pay him. Re Suttons case of Omaranui. Peoples opinion here and they are numerous express a decided desire and I constantly hear remarks on the matter of course Sutton is fanning the flame, that Govt. ought not to permit Henare Tomarea to defy the Law. I know you know all the particulars of the case therefore I will not trouble you with a repetition. I have suggested when I heard such remarks that perhaps when the Govt. had got over the Session they would take very good care to look into the question and see that the law should be carried out all blame Sheehan and hope the advice he gave Henare by telegram may be brought to light as if so he would certainly be disqualified by the Judge from pleading any longer as a Solicitor from having so far forgot his duty as to advise any subject to defy the Law. Everything is about as usual. Mr. Ormond kept me at it night and day while he was here -- I expect he will leave this morning if the "Rangatira" comes in he does work hard -- it brought back to my mind the year 1865 1866 -- when you used to stop in the office until 11 oclock at night. Mr. Gollan is looking very old -- he seems to have felt very much the report that was circulated a little ago about his daughter being engaged to Mr. Kinross. Old Capn. Newman too is getting aged. There will be very soon very few of the old Hawkes Bay identity left -- how time passes. Another Mr. C. Nairn -- he has aged fearfully and looks so bad -- whatever induced him to marry such a young girl at his age. Well Dear Sir if I think of anything else before Mr. Ormond goes (but he will give you all the news) I will add on to this. Trusting the perusal of these few lines won't trouble you, I am Dr. Sir Donald, Yours faithfully, Geo. Thos. Fannin. Sir Donald McLean C.M.G. Wellington.
