Napier, June 10th /72 Dear McLean, Just a line to ask you to see Whitaker and Russell about that poor devil Green. They sent to Wilson the other day to take summary proceedings against him for £250 on account of a joint stock Bank he once had shares in. Green lately recovered £210 from Whitmore and this was available to meet the £250 claim. Get Whitaker to forego the rest of the claim i. e. £40 the poor devil has not a penny and is head over ears in debt, He says paying this £40 will smother him. It is a hard case and no doubt Whitaker and Russell have it in their hands to let him off. People here may do something for him as respects his other debts if this one be settled. You will see in this morning's paper a retractation of the article in the H. B. Herald on which the libel case was founded i. e. so far as Purvis Russell and Wilson are concerned. The reason is as follows the article was in error on one point. It said the Trustees Wilson and P. Russell had divided the profits on the sale of Arihi's Heretaunga interest. This was not so. But the real reason of the retractation was as follows. The Attorney General has given an opinion that our Deed of purchase of Arihi's Heretaunga interest will hold, but that her Trustee Wilson and P. Russell must assist to enable the Deed to be sustained. The price of Wilson's and Russell's assistance is the retractation in the Herald the Heretaunga people pay the costs. You will now understand what the thing means. H. Russell has called on the paper to retract as regards him but they decline he threatens action but will scarcely dare. Yours always, J. D. Ormond
