Napier July 17th 1872 Dear Sir I forward by this mail a full report of the Pakowhai meeting which will show that Henare Mahia and his party have worked up their party well. The two Wairarapa Natives Karaima and an other were his principal advisers. Something must be done to engage the minds of these people - and the movement is spreading - Karaitiana is bound to do something this Session in the matter of their grievances whatever they may be. He has got a petition drawn up by Wilson - The Natives want something fresh to talk about - I send you a rough copy of some of the petitions Karaitiana has charge of - I think the Arawa one is unique of its kind and ought to be preserved - The 70 Mile Bush peopld intend giving £700 out of the balance coming to them towards the endowment of the Pakowhai - Omahu schools - I went to see Alexander the other day - He was in excellent health and busy with his garden planting seven acres more orchard - What a pity it is he will not come out and take some interests in Native Matters Karaitiana takes Poihipi and three other companions with him to Wellington. Old Hapuku has been a great trouble since his return Lyndon and myself have written you and Mr.Ormond a letter on the subject. Hapuku says I am to get £1000 out of the affair - I have written to Mr. Ormond also about this subject - Tahau and his friends have returned to live permanently at Taupo - Hohepa Tamamuku has mortgaged Omanui to Sutton for £400 - on acct. Wilson and Brandon. Wilson goes to Wellington during the Session - I suppose there is now no chance of getting my clerical allowance raised from £50 a year as at present to £100 as I am obliged when travelling in the interior to take a pack horse, etc. and of course the boy who acts as clerk - also - This is expensive both in the way of horses and travelling expenses - Colenso spoke the other day at Pakowhai very well, but the Natives would not listen after the first speech. If Alexander had been there and spoken they would not have acted so I fancy. I have seen Tareha and Maney about the land Tareha spoke to you about. Maney says he will settle the question with Tareha - The goods Tareha telegraphed to you for he bought himself from Kinross, and placed it against the money he will have paid him - I suppose there will be plenty of reading in Hansard presently.
