Taupo, January 19th, 1868. Sir, Kingi Hereheikei has just come from Tokano to see me, he tells me the following which I have the honor to report to you - Rewi is at Pukawa upper Taupo and has called together the hauhau of that part of the District. He (Rewi) says that he has come to tell the hauhau to keep quiet. This he has written to Kingi. Kingi Herekeikei returns to morrow to Tokano (which is only a few miles from Pukawa) there he will be sure to hear of the real reason of Rewi's visit - and will send a letter to me as soon as he does - Kingi also reports that twenty Ngatiporou hauhau are at Te Waru 20 miles from Tokano: the object of their coming there is to persuade the hauhau of that place to join them in the fighting. Kingi is almost the only chief at Taupo at present, on the return of the others the Komiti that I mentioned in my letter of the 14th December will assemble. Your letter to the Taupo chiefs reached, but as the greater part of them are away nothing will be done until they return. I shall be at the Meeting and will send you a report. I was chosen tumuaki of the Komiti and will do my best to see that your instructions are carried out. I have the honor to be, Sir, Your most obedient Servant, Jno.A. St. George. His Honor Donald McLean, Esqre., Government Agent, Hawkes Bay.
