Wednesday Morning. Alaxandra Waikato 8th. March 1871. Dear Mr. McLean, I have just now heard from the young Ngapuhi Chief Paratene (who is related to old Papahia and Maetana) the reason of Te Tapihaus coming down so constantly to Alaxandra At the time Mataki taki was taken by Ngapuhi a young girl of the Ngatihourua (Tapihaus Tribe) was taken salave (?) and at Ngapuhi she was married to an European called "Moore" she has by him 9 daughters and one son, some few months since Moore and his family have come to Waikato and now live at the junction of the Waipa and Puniu, Te Tapihana wants one or more of Moores daughters for himself to wife which the girls do not agree to he is therefore at there place at night whenever he can be, no doubt the slight these girls offer to him is one cause of his reckless conduct of late. I also say young Huirama this morning early who tells me that he meet Rewi yesterday who was on his way up to Te Kuiti Rewi told Huirama that he had seen you on Monday and that Mate to Whiwhi had said to Rewi come and take again your old wife which Rewi has understood to be the confiscated land of Waikato but more especially Mangatawheri which Rewi had accepted but that Mr. McLean had stopped Matede in his talk and said it did not mean that. Rewi told Huirama that there was to be some talk about the matter at a future day. As ever yours John White. P.S. I hope you will not allow me to be the officer here, as I can do more for you in office at Auckland.
