Napier, 30th Sept. 1859 My dear MacLean, I arrived here yesterday evening, and made immediate enquiry about the small map but without success. Pelliet(?) who is in Auckland no doubt has it, as it was to him I gave it by your directions, Old Bell wrote me a long letter, he only hold a portion of Dedwood but he speaks in no measured language about our Superintendent. Tom has acted most disceptive with my Father in law about the Registrar of Deeds, while he was pushing on Sealy he was holding out half promises to Bell. I therefore fear that some such is his intention with regard to me and the J. P. so my dear friend if you can without inconvenience recommend this before your return to Auckland, I am assured you will do so by having such a standing the Supt. would be more inclined, and the Council too, to benefit me on the principle of help yourself and your friends will help you.
