Civil Commissioner's Office, Napier March 3rd. 1864, Statement made by "Mr. Charles Nairn" Respecting the block of land known by the name of the Mangaroa and Raukawa - leased to me by Karaitiana, and Harawira, representing Ngati Poporo. The lease was finally entered into on the 11th. of December 1861, but the Natives had verbally promised me this block in 1852 - and before the final closing of the lease I took the precaution to enquire whether any other lease had been entered into by them with any other European - to which they unanimously declared that they had not made any agreement with any one. I then took possession of the land and remained in undisputed possession until I sold my interest in the run to "Mr. A. McLean", in, (to the best of my recollection) July, 1862. The boundaries to the block leased to me will be found in the document (the lease) handed over by me to "Mr. A. McLean". Signed before me this 3rd. day of March, 1864. (Sigd) Charles J. Nairn. Witness F.E. Hamlin.
