Alexandra 6th Octr., 1872 My dear Mr. McLean, I enclose a note I received from C.O.Davis which apeaks for itself, and from which I infer that he is indirectly in the confidence of the Government in the impending negotiations between Mr. Stafford and the King natives - There is in this District a growing feeling of suspicion and distrust, as to the ultimate result, of the native policy of the Government. Mr. Stafford is evidently bidding high for native favor, and while pursuing the policy of conciliation, I am afraid he will be driven to make dangerous concessions, which our present relations with the natives do not warrant, and which will encourage them to make exorbitant demands which can never be entertained - The announcement by the Col. Treasurer, of the withdrawal of the grant to Road Boards, has been received with a howl of indignation through the Country Districts. Mr. Gillies now enjoys the reputation of being the most unpopular man in this Province - I believe the King natives are now very badly off for food - Ahipene was down the other day and give me a very lamentable account of the destitution of the people about Te Kuiti I had a Telegram from Jackson stating that Mr. Vogel would move a "want of confidence" soon - Outsiders think this is rather premature, but I suppose the opposition know what they are about - I am in communication with J. Hetit at Otorohanga, and should anything of importance transpire at Te Kuiti, I will send you a Telegram - Hoping that you will soon be at the again. I am, Very sincerely yours John Hill
