Marekakaho Dec 3rd/68 Ma chere frere Did not write by last mail. Thought you were cruising on the C.C. Unless you get away from Napier soon fear the weather will be too trying. The heat here is excessive. It cannot be less so in Napier. Cannot hear a word for yr movements except by the Herald which is meagre enough. Wood is fast on the decline. It is insolent to publish all these letters - what double dealing in unexpected quarters. It is all well - only shews the country's more lucidely the many attempts at thwarting yr plans and still greater implicates the powers that be. When will it all cease and the country be no farther lacerated by these diabolical political intrigues. To work with such men is truly but a game at cross purposes. May you be guided. There are traitors, many at such times. It is hard to know of whom to make a confidante. The Gov. clique are bitter but they forget that the just are even bolder & that integrity and worth will triumph in defiance of all opposition. All hands here are busy. Christmas intervening was a drawback. The men had a full day with races etc etc. Twigg is excited. This is a cool moonlight night. Wish I were on my way to Napier but prudence whispers that I am better here whilst you are so busy but you must let me know if you want me. Are the Waipu people away. Do tell Mr Tevellyan [?] to lift the dining room carpet & lay the new Maori matting which is in the box underneath the house. It will be cooler & save the wear of the carpet. How is Major & Mrs Green. Hope little Maude is not fogetting me. Any news from England. Did you spend C.K. in bed. Now I thought about you. Wondered what you were doing, who with you, if in good or his ordinary spirits. Had a good glass of Moselle but off course remembered no-one but your great self. How is old Anderson, Gollan & little Morrice. He was with you I know. Are there no orderlies going up or down now. Never see a creature from Napier. Ma chere frere Yours affectionately Annabella McLean
