From the Pole (Flagstaff) at Petane. April 1, 1865 To Messrs. McLean & Cooper. Sirs, This is to inform you of the conclusion arrived at by our meeting. The first was, the good established by Te Moananui (i. e. That the late Chief having said that peace was to be preserved in the Province, that pledge is now renewed) second, the word of Potatau to hold fast by. Third the saying of King Matuaera about "The Post of Peace". These are 3 sayings - for good, the law - for love - for the Post of peace, lasting welfare. These are permanent sayings of ours for ever and ever. If these words are broken (literally "cut") by evil spirits evil will ensue in our opinion. If they are not cut by evil spirits it will be well, as far as we can see. Now, attend also to this our boundaries are Waikare and Cape Kidnapper (i. e. the boundaries within which the writers confine the above expression of their opinion) those are our boundaries because we wished to fix them by our own doors because each separate chief has his own place and takes his own line of conduct (i.e. writers won't answer for anything beyond their immediate reach). The "Posts of war" are at Whanganui, Waitotara, Taranaki, Waikato, Tauranga, Maketu, Te Awa ateatua, Wakatane, Ohiwa. That bloodshed arose from Pakehas' heads. It will not be right to bring that blood hither, leave it where it is. That is all we have decided on. Do you send this to the Waka Maori, that our Maori friends may see it and the Pakehas as well. That is all. From us Paora Toki, Maika Tuakana, Reti Mio, Tiemi Wakahoehoe, Tamati Tararua From your affectionate friends of the Hou Pai Marire.
