Wellington 25 Novr. 1872 My dear Sir, The Carbine and ammunition for native chiefs were forwarded per "Nevada" to Major Withers, and he was instructed to see you as to their disposal. From the enclosed medical certificate, I think Colonel Lyon should be granted leave of absence for a month or six weeks - He had a somewhat similar attack last year - Major Clare would command during his absence - Colonel St. John reports by telegram that Major Cumming is very ill and unfit for duty, also that there is not a sound troop horse in the District. I find that out of the eight horse six were purchased by major Cumming during the past twelve months so they ought not to be in the condition reported. I will enquire into this matter as soon as I receive Col. St. John's inspection report. Mr. Abbott, who spoke to you a short time ago about joining the A. C., was among those who perished at the wreck of the "City of Newcastle". Everything goes on well in Defence Department Mr. Hall tells me he is going away today I get on very well with him. He is very particular, but a very pleasant man of business. Trusting that you have quite recovered your usual health and strength. I remain my dear Sir, Yours very truly, W. Moule The Hon. D. McLean, Native Minister
