Heretoa July 21, 1845 Dear Sir, I beg to enclose a letter from Mr. Taylor, sorry it is so much soild; but it was done by the native in bringing it over the river to me. Te Pakaru arrived here last week, I was very glad to see him, but very much to my surprise he wants me to baptize him here. Of course I can only do that by Mr. Whiteleys consent as he is one of his people. A messenger was despatched on Sat. to Kawhia, and he stays until the 24th of Aug. when my Chapel is to be opened for Divine worship. He wishes me to write to you and to request that you will come down on that occasion. I need not say that if you can do so we shall be very glad to see you. I rather expect that old Pakeke will be baptized at the same time as he has now placed himself under regular instruction with that view. I think te Pakaru feels rather anxious about his son and would be gratified if he could be here at the baptism. I start for New Plymouth on the 27th of Aug. so that I shall accompany you if you come. I hope Mr. Turton will come but am not sure. I expect a large assembly of natives and it would perhaps be a good opportunity of talking with them on various subjects. Excuse haste. Yours truly J. Skevington D. McLean Esq. P.A. New Plymouth.
