Extract from letter to McLean from W. Moule. Tauranga, 29 July 1870. My dear Sir, From what I hear there appears to be some uneasiness at Tokongamutu in respect to the roads and telegraph lines now being constructed. A deputation of Piriraukas from Whakamarama waited on the Ngatirangis this week, with a message from the king, requesting their attendance at a meeting in the neighbourhood of Waikato, and the messengers stated that the making of roads will lead to trouble; however, the answer they take back will not be encouraging to the King party, viz. That the Ngatirangis will not attend the meeting unless at the request of the Government, and even should Ministers desire their attendance, they would prefer not to go. You would be pleased to hear by Telegram from Capt. Preece that the Uriweras had declared for peace, and of their intention to come in - I think their movements have been accelerated by Ropata's threat to clear their country in the spring. .........
