Oakbourne 11th. Novr. 1868. My dear Ormond, The bearer Mr. John Van Heyshuyson is the party of whom I spoke to you about yesterday and whose application to be made collector of the Education rate I forwarded to you in Wellington in one of my letters which failed to reach you. I have known him for some years and has business transactions with him I have found him to be educated, thoroughly trustworthy and most respectable, he is well known to Cruickshank, Grant and Fleming who can speak in the highest terms of his steadiness and general capability, he is somewhat an invalid and thereby incapacitated from taking any heavy manual labor and if you can assist him in getting the appointment I should esteem it a personal favor. I have told him that the salary would be small but I think the Government might assist him by giving him the preference as sub-enumerator by throwing any similar employment in his way, if you will kindly explain the nature of the appointment to him and the Salary he would be likely to receive and use your influence to ensure the appointment for him, You will oblige My dear Ormond, Yours very truly, Jno. Davis Canning.
