Wellington Dec. 1st. 1858 Dear Sir, I returned here last Friday Evening after having completed the purchase of a portion only of the Waikanae Block as there is no objection or difficulty in this purchase, I trust that there will be as little delay as possible in bringing it into the Market; as to Manawatu, the outward pressure from one quarter and another is tremendous, the constant worry is completely wearing one out. The Ministers who are here appear to know about as of the characters of the Natives or their management as they do of the Aztecs. Rawiri's case of Reserves at Tauhere nikau is again giving considerable trouble, however The N. Minister has made my course clear, buy him out if I can if not put him at once in possession of his section at Motupiri on Tauhere nikau river, without at all considering the sale of it by The C. L. Comr. to Europeans, by the bye The Minister for N. Affairs had a growl about Pukekohe, I had a quiet laugh to myself of course I have had a great deal of trouble about my accounts but I think now will be able with Mr. Carkeek's assistance to get everything right. I have been as you see obliged to send a special requisition for a paltry £100 for food for Natives such as if supplied by myself. By the bye I enclose you two bills which I have paid on your acct. and shall be obliged by your taking them to your account for indidentals etc. and send me the respective amts. as I am dreadfully hard up or shall be by the time I have squared accts. with Mr. Carkeek, also do not delay the £71.000 as I cannot settle up without it. Also oblige me by letting me know the proper form for the receipt that I am to get from Levin for the £20 that I have paid him on acct of Te Hapuku that I may be enabled to get all money matters clear by the end of the year. I proceed to Wairarapa on Saturday if possible I feel very much annoyed at the inquisitive stile of interference instituted by the M. for N. A. here. Let me know if there is any probability of the reports of your secession from the N.L.P.D. being true where the reports come from I cannot well make out, but I think from your actual friends here. Clifford's provincial friends tried very hard to make him pull the Hon's the Col. Secy's honorable nose on his arrival here but in vain. He, Mr. S. has not shown out at all. Richmond is very actively engaged writing and receiving deputations I think just amusing himself with the W. Provincialists. I have written to Mr. Richmond about the price for land to be paid at Manawatu and the W. Coast and if I get his answer in time will forward it to you.
