The Cedars July 12th. /67 My dear Sir If ever you glance over an Auckland paper you will see that yesterday it was mentioned that after the Business of the Court was finished Mr. Wynn and Mr. Brookfield spoke on the urgent necessity (as the increase of the work was so great) to have as in Wellington civil and criminal. The Bar and the Bench are confering together and are going to bring the matter before the Attorney General - perhaps this mail may begin the correspondence on the subject - will you kindly therefore be on the look out for my husband - The Attorney General does not know my Husband - I entreated Captn. Symonds to write off at once to Mr. Stafford thanking him for the written promise we have of an increase of salary and at the same time asking for this new berth - as usual , he said no "wait till the berth is made" - and "McLean is sure to speak to Stafford about it" - but in the meantime the berth may be made for and given to somebody else - Now I will tell you what I have done - it was myself who wrote before to Mr. Stafford and he wrote me this kind answer - otherwise my husband would have remained forgotten he has been encouraged to ask you for some favour owing to my having had this favourable answer - now I never thanked Mr. Stafford for his promise - so I have now done so as a - and at the same time I have told him of this new berth the people hope to have made - I have asked him if the salary is say £500 per annum, to give it to my Husband - if it is pay then I have asked him increasing the pay of Onehunga to the duties of the new berth to my Husband's duties - he says he could easily do it say - , and in Onehunga - So now will you kindly lose no time (do not wait till the berth is made) and go to Mr. Stafford and have a long talk as to how you and he together can confer some favour and benefit on my dear husband - I know your kind heart and you will not think me I remain, Yours sincerely Alithea S. Symonds
