Taranaki August 5 1852 My dearest Douglas I am sending a messenger off with a letter to the Governor and I shall direct him to call up for any letters you may have to send. I also send you the key of the desk but you must keep it yourself and not allow it, as you sometimes do, to lay carelessly about. I also wish you to send me the account sales in one of Mr Halse's letters for a wardrobe and wash hand stand of mine that was sold by auction. The accounts will probably be found with one of Mr Halse's private notes. Send me the large packet cont[ain]g the Poverty Bay land claims if you can find it. It is from Dr Sinclair to whom you have no doubt written. I cannot my own puss give you a long letter at present. I am exceedingly hurried. Persons are coming in to call from all quarters. Natives are also waiting on me. I am to dine with Capt King at 3 pm and to see Mr Turton. I sincerely trust you are well. Do not forget me in your prayers. May God bless and protect you. Continue to be a good girl and you may always rely on my affection. A vessel is hourly expected so that I shall again write. I hope soon to get through the more difficult part of my duties. You told me it was better to finish as much as I could when here than to have to leave you again. Do not suppose I am happy without you. Take care of yourself and believe me to be ever your own affectionate husband. Donald McLean In case the papers may be in the tin box I send the key of it also. I have been looking among my keys but cannot find that of the tin box. You must have it if not I may have lost it.
