I telegraphed to Haultain but am sorry to find the wire is down; Dr.Brown takes the chloroform the biscuit is shipped and the ammunition, I trust the boat will get away at 10 tonight. The Wairoa expedition has returned from the Puketapu which appears to have been evacuated two months ago, they found large crops of potatoes, took a few prisoners and Haultain wishes to send St. Kilda for them which will be done whenever she can land boats there. There is very little news from the South, there may be letters for you in the Wellington expected tonight -- I am exceedingly glad that Whitmore is giving so much satisfaction, no one will be more rejoiced than I shall to see this unfortunate war ended. From what I can gather the aspect of things is better on the West Coast. You ought to have had your sketch book when up in the Ngatapa ranges, although I do not suppose the scenery is in any way equal to the lake and mountain views of Otago such as the Wakatipu for instance.
