5 August 1861 Maraekakaho My dear brother I have arrived hear a few days ago and I should have gone up to Auckland to explain maters to you but I have to se some of the natives hear before I go as they have changed much since I was hear last. So maney people offering them rents for their land and they want to be paid back rents at the same rate and the timber taken out of the bush. A new party claims but I hope in a few days with the help of an old friend I shall be abble to keep them in their old way till such time as I se you as I don't intend to offer them rent till such time as it is legal to do so. I had letter from you in Canterbury finding fault with all I had done but when I go to Auckland I shall be abble to satisfy both you and your partners with what I done for you and I had a great maney dificultys to contend with in a gold country and in the midle of winter. We shall taulk of that some other time. I have left on the run sheep ewes 15000 and about 30 wether for the use of the place, bullocks working 10 and one new dray horses mares 4 geldings the 3 men their, one sheepherd the other tow building sheepens houses twelve months provisions. The accounts will show all and I have in my possession receipts to show everything and I intend to bring all the Napier accounts and have a clear understanding. I am sorry to say the loss been so much but you are not near so bad as some. When I se you you shall se that you and your partners may be well pleased to have the place started at all.
