Sunday My Dear Sir I forgot to tell you when you were here that John Moses when he called on me a few days ago said he would write to Mr McLean to ask him to stand for The Bay district. I encouraged him to do so. I would write to McLean but am so stupid I am not able to lay clearly before him the situation of affairs here but if you should write to him next post please tell him from me (as we are all his friends here) that he either stand for this place or get some one he can trust to to call on us for our votes for if not opposed by some respectable person. do please tell McLean this from me and say I am too ill to write at length myself yet. pray excuse me but as regards McLean I believe you and I are on the same side. I do think it wd. be best for McLean to send some friend of his here to canvas he would be sure to win and it would be a vote gained to the present Government to whom the majority of the voters here are favourable, it would be a misery if either of the present candidates were to succeed as for Carleton if were to win he and his mission mob would for the future lord it over us in fine style as he would consider he had a lease of the Bay of Islands membership for life. I do believe your kind visit did me some good for although I am very giddy and stupid I feel stronger and have a little more hope of ultimate recovery. I am My Dear Sir Yours very truly F. E. Maning P. S. You said that you occasionally correspond with McLean or I would not have taken the liberty I have which at the best is too much, F.E.M.
