Clive Aug 12 1868 My dear McLean I have your favor of the 7th inst --- and am sorry you have been so out of sorts --- The worry and anxiety of these times are sufficient to try any bodys patience in themselves without bodily affliction. On Monday while in Napier I sent to Haultain Cox's overseer's report about the Taupo --- Today my messenger from Town brings me word of some 300 natives marching past Mr. Heliar's station --- We have had S. W. wind and rain for the two past days and I did not go down --- I make the Clive policeman go down for letters or telegrams every day that I do not go --- It is passing strange that nothing has been heard from Whitmore since I sent you his last telegram when he was in sight of the enemys fires. I expect him back every day now most likely in the Waipara and have no hope of any success in over taking the prisoners and recapturing them, although I think he would spare no effort to do so --- I wish he may get the chance. Fannin writes me to day that he telegraphed to you about the Taupo natives and sent your answer --- with Cooper's news as well --- I shall keep you well informed of any authentic news, but the idle rumours that float about would keep the wires doing nothing else. Money and men must be had even if we have a --- Murder must be punished or this Island is useless for 20 years to come. These men flushd with victory will otherwise very soon put the Interior in a blaze of rebellion --- The only consolation for us is the great fact of a good gold field at Auckland which may extend to the far interior and for ever settle the native question by overwhelming numbers --- Try and get some force stationed at or near Taupo. Yours very truly Joseph Rhodes
