Letter from Jno. Rogan, to Donald McLean, dated 15th. April 1854. Takutahi 15th April 1854. My dear Sir, I have just returned from Ahu Ahu, where a Committee was held, at which I was invited to attend by Hikahu Taounui, and Wetini Wahia, the two old Chiefs of the Interior, who arrived the day after your departure from Kawhia. It will be sufficient to say that these Chiefs are, or pretend to be, opposed to the sale of all lands in this and the Mokau district; and particularly Purehari. Hikaka returned the money token sent him from Mokau. He alluded in a speech to an offer made by him of land between the Taniwa and Pukearuhi, which was not entertained by the Government; and is therefore is opposed to the sale of all lands. The land at Awaroa is surveyed, and I have no reason to alter my opinion as to the extent. I have no means here for protecting the survey, but the plans will be forwarded to you with the least possible delay, so soon as I return to town. The road to Mokau occupies me with purpose, which I hope to commence on Monday morning next. Honi Punipi is in a great minority, but I think of surveying the coast boundary of his land notwithstanding the caution I received at the Committee. The Velox Brig arrived here from Taranaki, No news. Joseph desires to be remembered to you. I remain yours faithfully, (Signed) John Rogan, To:- Donald McLean.
