Copy Te Mahoe Mokau March 18th. 1845. Dear Sir, I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your kind favour of the 10th. inst., and to say that I will attend to your requests; and we shall be glad to see you here when you come to Mokau. We have removed from our old Station about a mile up the river to a place called Te Mahoe. Last week, some natives from inland, eomplained to me that Hari (Mr. Halse) had taken, and sold, their pigs at Waitoki, but given nothing to them as payment. Something (I thing prints) he had given to the Kaharoa and Tikaohao, because he was their "whanannga". Afterwards I was informed the beach was tapu'd by the Kaharoa on account of their "matenga" upon Hari. If I understand the matter right, it is this. Sometime ago (perhaps a twelve month or more) Hari gave property (belonging to his brother) to the natives inland. These natives now brought some pigs down this river, gave them to the Kaharoa and Tikaokao, and they, to Hari. So Waitoki his tuakana got riri and took possession of the pigs as payment of the presents received by the natives from Hari. Mr. Halse, as you are aware, has been living at Tangaporutu off and on these last twelve months. As I understand, the tapu is for pigs only, and I am so full of work at home now, I have not been yet; but in a few days' time, hope to enquire further into the matter. About Te Paipa's affair we can talk when you come here. They say, - "Let the Governor come and wakawa him at Mokau." There is a rumour again that a taua from Ngatiruanui is coming here by an inland road, so as to avoid New Plymouth, and come suddenly upon these natives at Tangoporutu, but they seem to give it little eredit, as they keep all quiet at their work. I remain, dear Sir, Yours very truly (Signed) O.H. Schnackenberg. To:- D. McLean Esq. Abori ginal Protector New Plymouth.
