Wairoa Sepr. 21st, 1866 My dear Sir I wish you would kindly write and let me know whether you have recd. the sum of £10 which you advanced to my brother some time ago. I drew his money from the bank when I was in Port and I either lodged the £10 - or else sent it in a letter, at least I think I did, if I have done neither I have mislaid or lost the money as I have a distinct recollection of putting aside two five pound notes for that purpose, so if you have not recd. it or it has not been lodged in the bank perhaps you will kindly let me know and I will make it good - My impression is that I must have sent it in a letter but I cant be sure, and I have no distinct recollection of lodging it at the bank though it was my intention to have done so - I start again next week for Te Mahia and as there are a few subjects that I am not quite clear upon with reference to the Natives of that part of the district I have deferred sending in my report till my return I am sorry to say that Grog selling still continues among the natives to a large extent - I have inflicted one fine of £10 and I have two if not three cases coming on of the same sort next week - All sorts of rumours about Anaru Matete but where he really is or what his intentions are seem to be very doubtful. I think Kopu and Ihaku would like to have another turn with him in the warm weather - Things are dull here, weather rather wet, and the country flooded -I hope you will succeed with the Poverty bay business - I dont think Mr Rice came very clean out of his part of the business. I am, My dear Sir Faithy. yours S. Deighton
