New Plymouth, 16th Febry. 1874. My dear McLean, Can anything be done for Major Baddeley he was a Capt. in the 40th Reg. and sold out here to take command of the Taranaki Militia since then he has been farming etc. and is now keeping a toll gate at Hokitika which brings him in about £110 a year. I have known him since a boy, he is thoroughly reliable and trustworthy sober and industrious but has not much ability. He is the eldest son of old Col. Baddeley who was in command of the Engineers in N. Z. for some time. Could he be employed as Station Master on some of the Railways. I should be very glad if you could give him something to do whatever he untertook would be conscientiously carried out I am sure. I knew nothing of the meeting of the Assembly until I received Vogels telegram. I suppose you have ere this put things right again. Yours sincerely, H.A. Atkinson. The Hon. D. McLean, etc.
