Wairoa. December 14th. 1865. Dear Sir, I forward Matenga's oath of allegiance. After coming to the Wairoa, with Ihaka and others, I returned to Waangawehi, and surveyed the Block offered by the Ngapuhi. It is a small Block of about 1200 acres; but there are other pieces adjoining offered. I hope you will be able to read this. It is written in great pain. My horse fell with me yesterday, and broke my collar bone, and bruised my side very much. I am in bed at the Wairoa. The Doctor says I cannot ride for three weeks. I will go to Napier by first chance. The natives here are anxious to attack the Hau Haus. I remain, dear Sir, Yours sincerely, (Signed) S. Locke. To:- His Honor, D. McLean Esq. Napier.
