New Plymouth Nov. 7th. 1848 Sir, I have the honour to acquaint you that I have received a letter from the Colonial Secretary, Wellington, dated Oct. 11th. 1848. requesting me to instruct you to proceed forthwith to Wellington for the purpose of undertaking negotiations for the purchase from the natives, of the whole of the lands lying between Wangaehu and Porirua, which they do not require for their own wants. The particulars of the proposed arrangements with the natives, and other general instructions in reference to the duty, await your arrival. I am also requested to inform you that from the date of your leaving Taranaki to engage in this service, an allowance of one guinea per diem will be allowed, in addition to your salary, which is intended to cover every expense, including that of a horse.
