Wellington June 27, 1864 My dear McLean Fox tells me that you say there are some Ngatiapas, and several Rangitanes resident in Ahuriri, who are entitled to share in the purchase money of Herewanuis block. In the list of owners given me by John Mason, there are only 3 Ngatiapas - and some 50 Rangitanes and Ngatiraukawas (the latter being about a dozen) - Will you give me the names of the Ngatiapas - and kindly give notice to all the Rangitanes in your Province, that they had better at once proceed to Manawatu and put in their Claims. I send up the Deed of purchase for execution this week, and will probably hand over the £12000 within three weeks from this time. They talk of handing me back some £5000 on deposit at 5 p. c. interest - I hope you will fix a time for our meeting for the purchase of the 40 Mile Bush, before I pay over the money - as the occasion will be a good one for making known our intention. A Special Messenger arrived last night from Wanganui, with the Intelligence that the Ngatiruanui were proceeding to Pipiriki to have another duel with our friendly Natives - that they numbered 340 and that there were already nr Pipiriki some 100 Waikatos. The Putiki Natives had all started up the river to Jerusalem or Jericho - the appointed place of battle. They are rum beggars. I half doubt whether the right will take place - Pehi who is playing fast and loose has been ordered by Tahana to remain with the Queens Natives, and on no account to return back to his place and people. His Tribe seem to have thrown him overboard. As soon as the Council is over, and they ought to shut up in a week, I shall go up. I see you are going to have another Session.
