11 June 1862 My dear MacLean, I received your note from Auckland the Tikakino business is finished also the Survey and arrangement of about 200 acres of land, adjoining the Town of Hampden (about 5 miles north of Tikokino Pa) on the East side of the Forest, which was sanctioned by the Superintendent, at least so far, that the Natives are to pay for it. Hapuku has agreed to pay for 100 acres but my own opinion is the rest will not be paid for and there is the foundation of a nice row laid by the intercession of the Civil Commission who worked the oracle for the natives with the Superintendent, I am about to arrange the Survey is complained of the Wailukurau Reserve on the South of the Tukituki, and there are other disputes about Waipoua Reserve and also about the Tarewa Reserve on Cooper's Run The natives say that Hori Niania having been wrong at Pourere and the Government paying the natives in consequence that they will claim for his supposed or real misdeeds at the Tarewa reserves. I can swear that he pointed out with other natives the reserves as I surveyed it and that I surveyed it. Correctly, maps are not of all avail in such matters but memory is therefore this should be set at rest, I was disappointed at Wilson's appointment but such things will be I would much rather get some general Govt. appointment such as mentioned to you as chief surveyor of Native Lands or as a compiler of the different surveys executed under the new order of things, however, I suppose time must take its course.
