April 4th 1861 My dear Sir, I am just back from Maungatawiri, Tuakau and the meeting at Taupo. there is the same feeling amongst the natives; they want peace, but are not willing to make any concessions. The meeting at Taupo declared themselves for the Queen, before separating. Tipa and Teraia behaved very well, but there was strong opposition, on the part of the minor chiefs. in town every body is styding his own advantage, the fanatics, do not believe in a peace, made without their cooperation. Daldy Graham and Co. do not believe in a peace, without direct land purchase. The Jews and the sinners, do not believe in peace without 4 or 5 thousand men, remaining for a time in the good town of Auckland, and I do not believe in peace, without a martial law who will makeall them good people mind their own business, they call me a damned frenchman, and do not alter their opinion, but the sensible men have confidence, and know that the governor nor yourself would sacrifice the interest of the colony. all is anxiety for news of an official character. I have made a report to Mr. Smith upon my last tour, and I am ready for another I remain my Dear Sir, Yours very truly, G. C. Charon
