New Plymouth December 30th, 1854 My dear Sir, I sent you a short note by the steamer which left this yesterday for Nelson but owing to her uncertain stay I was obliged to post it in time for the first boat - for that reason I was unable to mention the arrival of Major Nugent as well as the return of Mr. Turton - the former is here to inquire into the recent Native Disturbances and will then return to Auckland overland - The 58th is going home but the Colonel remains - it is whispered that he is to be our Governor. The 65th is to be increased to 1000 strong and will constitute the only force by which this country is to be protected in as far as the Genl. Govt. is concerned. Hone Ropiha, Poharama, Waka and Ropiha Moturoa are here for a korero with Major Nugent. I must beg you to excuse the very short notes I am so frequently obliged to send owing to interruptions from both Europeans and natives - I hear Col.Wynyard has resigned the Superintendency and that Beckham and Brown are likely to be candidates for that office - I am now going to the Hospital with the Native Becretary to see the wounded natives - Hoping you are well, I remain, Faithfully yours, H. Halse * I have since heard from the Major that the Colonel has received instructions to remain behind until his successor arrives. H.H.
