New Plymouth, 27th August, 1861. My Dear Sir, I have been looking out for Parris for some time back in the hope of going back by this opportunity but I suppose he will be here by the Victoria which is expected every day. Beyond the usual amount of crimination and recrimination between Natives and Europeans there is nothing whatever to write about from this dull hole, and the sooner I am away from here the better I shall be pleased there does not appear to be much important news by this mail, beyond the American affair which is unsatisfactory. I am exceedingly sorry I have not had the means of calling together a meeting of the friendly Natives for the purpose of getting up an address to the Governor but the Natives are busy writing a short one which is got up entirely by their own suggestion and with which I have had nothing whatever to do. It is probable by the next opportunity there will be an address from each hapu - I am troubled with a few of my dark friends who are reading over their addresses to me and as I am entirely at a loss to fill even this scrap of paper I hope you will not feel disappointed with this short note and Believe me to remain always yours, J. Rogan.
