4 February 58. My dear Sir, A collision took place yesterday morning between Ihaia and Tamihana under the following circumstance. The former with 20 of his natives, was collecting firewood from the Reserve on the B. Block near the beach, and carrying it across Mr. Hoby's farm which is between that Reserve and the Ikamoana. Tamihana with a large number of natives entered on Mr. Hoby's premises and commenced firing upon Ihaia, who retired firing with the loss of 1 killed and 5 wounded. The whole of the firing took place on Hoby's land to the great terror of his wife and family, whom I called upon shortly after the occurrence. One bullet lodged in the roof of their house and might have been fatal to one of the family. I expostulated with the natives but only got what we are all used to here, insulted. I remained on the Block until late in the afternoon and returned with Mr. Whiteley who is uneasy about our troubles and much dispirited --- neither side paying the least attention to his scheme. In haste faithfully yours, H. Halse.
