Newman's September 8th/64 My dear McLean, We have got this far on our way home and have a beautiful day again to fetch home with. What I write you about is to ask you to tell Weber that the Storekeepers and Publicans who pay the road-people are wanting their money badly and that if he cannot get up country at once he had better send up some cash or cheques on account to them. Rathbone spoke to me about this yesterday and Cowper at Wallingford is I hear very hard-pressed - please see that Weber attends to this - I promised Rathbone to see to it. The road is very fair up to Waipawa between that place and Waipukerau it is very bad indeed and will require a great deal of work expended on it. If Major Dywer gives any hope of letting the troops go into tents as the season advances by all means keep them up at the Stockade and let them go to the work in the meantime as we talked of when I was down - walking to and form their work to the Stockade. If you settle this with Dwyer let Weber have instructions to lay out work for them when he comes up country and let the work be at that point on the road the nearest to the Stockade. It will be a great saving to us if we get the Troops to work. Yours always, J. D. Ormond.
