Auckland 29 March 1875 Dear Sir Donald, Your Telegram to hand and "Luna" will probably be on again tomorrow. I was glad to see Capt. Fairchild who gave me a good deal of news in reference to your tedious negotiations at Maketu. I saw him on Saturday the day he came in; I saw also Te Popo on his way to the Bay from Whakatane, who said that you intended to remain at Maketu until the Arawas had had their feast of talking, and their grievances (each man having a complaint) were finally arranged. Fairchild tells me that he believe you will be able to leave in a very few days. Your presence will lead to beneficial results in healing the breaches between the natives as well as between our own officers from whom perhaps the former have taken a lesson; It is reported that many of Harris and Mitchell's negotiations are being repudiated and that they have made advances on the part of the Government to something like £20,000. I send you a copy of this Evening Star in reference to the session and releasing of the ''Morimotu'' Block near Wanganui and Taupo. Of the truth of either or both these rumours you will know best of all. Sir George Grey is gone for a few days rest to the Kawau. The Provincial party including O'Rourke have of course made him out a God send to the Province and people but the excitement is now subsiding and may soon result in a reaction. I think he will soon repent the day he has entered on a new and less distinguished Political career. Several natives from Upper Thames on way to Kuiti. Major - will give you particulars of their reaching Alexandra. Pal not yet back. Sent him word to finish his Claims as you directed. Trade is very quiet. Weather fine, and people holiday seeking. Nothing as yet very encouraging from new goldfield and dven there, there are rumours of a little intriguing. Auckland water works inaugurated today. The rate will be high. Mr. Vogel in Frazers Magazine defends New Zealand Finances etc. vide Evening Star - latest English news. Hoping this will, under the circumstances, find you in good spirits. Believe me, yours faithfully, H. T. Kemp
