Dear McLean, Cooper has received directions to purchase the Puketitiri bush and Pourerere Reserves has become more complicated than ever. Hapuku having returned the horses, by Northwood, and both himself and Morena disavow the Receipt or deed. I wish I could know when you will be at Napier, as I do not wish to continue attached to your Dept much longer. The pay is too small. Now that I have commenced as a Surveyor and Land Agent in a quiet way to admit of my being called away at any time from perhaps a contract or other profitable work. If the Government would pay me for horse hire and expense, I would, that is, if I can possible do so, stop to complete the present complex work of finishing up but to pay six shillingsa day for my horse and at least eight shillings for myself, without any toddy, at hotels out of a pound a day is simply making my services less valuable that the labourer employed by me at 7/- per diem. Yours truly, M. Fitzgerald Napier 25 Jany. 62 I can give you every information about Pourerere Bush from a survey which I made. M.F.
